Moldova: – Moldovan Portal Assessing Academic Teachers is a social portal on which Moldovan students can assess the work of their professors. Elena Zgardan, the portal’s originator, would like it to become a tool for providing solid information about the Moldovan universities. “We’re at the beginning of a very long road,” says Zgardan about the project.

At Moldovan universities no one is assessing its academic teachers. There is no solid information about the level of teaching, while corruption is still a serious problem. It seems that it is the money – not good results – that guarantees getting a higher education. Elena Zgardan decided to face these problems, so together with her husband she created – a social portal on which Moldovan students can evaluate the work of their professors. “We would like a professional and effective system of education, that’s why we created,” wrote the creators of the portal.

“This is a completely new initiative,” says Elena Zgardan, the originator of the project. “My husband is a lecturer and conducts classes not only in Moldova but also abroad, where he is assessed by his students after every term. If the given marks are below a certain level, the university has a right to end the cooperation.” However, Elena emphasised that the aim of the project is not only to speak of the negative aspects of Moldovan universities but also to show great professors “there are plenty of whom in Moldova” as Zgardan says. “We would like the universities to be able to boast about them.” For a month, the front runner in the ranking of the 25 best professors has been Arcadie Gerasimos, a journalism academic teacher at the Moldova State University.

Based on the work of volunteers, the project began at the beginning of September. On the portal we can find academic teachers from 18 biggest Moldovan universities. Though Zgardan calls “a family project,” she makes no effort to conceal that her plans for the portal are much bigger. She would like to create a ranking of universities. “We would like to provide exhaustive information about the offer of Moldovan universities, their support for students and how they prepare people for the job market. We’re at the beginning of a very long road,” concludes Elena Zgardan.
