Conflict Resolution in the European Neighbourhood
The South Caucasus from Comparative Perspective

13 – 18 September 2010 – Tbilisi, Georgia

OBJECTIVE

The summer school is geared towards young researchers of the South
Caucasus as the future opinion-makers and decision-makers of the
region. This group assumes a key role since they may take a mediating
function between state institutions, international actors and societal
organisations in the transformation processes and conflict management
in the region. In order to support these processes the summer school
offers the opportunity to acquire and discuss the newest findings of
peace, conflict, transformation and European studies with
international experts. Besides roundtable discussions and working
groups, the programme includes interactive training such as scenario
analysis. The improvement of methodical and presentation skills is
also addressed.
Altogether, the following four subject areas will be covered:

– Conflict and Conflict Transformation
– The Caucasus and Europe
– Europeanization and European Neighbourhood Policy
– Methods of Social Science, with a special emphasis on comparative
case studies

ORGANISATION

The Summer School is jointly organised by the Institute of Political
Science / Chair of International Relations and Development Policy, the
Institute for Development and Peace of the University of
Duisburg-Essen (INEF) and the Institute for European Studies, Tbilisi
State University. The conference is supported by the German Academic
Exchange Service (DAAD).

APPLICATION PROCESS

ELIGIBILITY

– Previous education/occupation must suit the summer school
– Participants must reside in the South Caucasus to be eligible for
funding (travel costs as well as board and lodging), however,
applications (self-funded) from other regions are highly welcome
– Good oral and written proficiency of English

Please note: No conference fees will be raised. The working language
is English.

APPLICATION

Applicants are requested to submit the following documents:
a) Letter of Motivation (600-800 words)
b) Curriculum Vitae
c) Two References (Name and Contact)
d) Overview on previous studies / Transcript of Records
e) Short essay (600-800 words) on one of the following topics:
1)The ENP and Conflict Resolution
2)Conceptualising the South Caucasus as ‚European
Neighbourhood’
3)The Future of the Eastern Partnership

The files sent for the application must be in English and delivered in
one e-mail.
The deadline for submission is 13 June 2010. The successful candidates
will be notified no later than 30 June 2010.
