Research Approaches to Former Soviet States: A Practical
Introduction

At the University of Oxford, History Faculty
Friday 12 – Saturday 13 November 2010
[Funded by the AHRC, BASEES, UEA and University of Oxford]

The University of Oxford and UEA are pleased to announce a two-day
collaborative workshop for current postgraduate students planning to
make research trips to, or involving sources from, former Soviet
states.

The workshop will have a strong interdisciplinary focus,
incorporating talks on researching History, Film, Theatre, Visual
Art, Literature, Language, Music, Cultural Studies and Memory. We aim
to stimulate exchange and interaction not only between institutions,
but also across academic disciplines.

In addition to papers from experienced academic researchers,
participants will have the opportunity to hear from fellow
postgraduates who have just completed extensive research trips,
primarily in Russia and Ukraine, and will share crucial practical
information and give advice on the evolution of a project during the
research process.

Each day will end with informal roundtable discussions at which
attendees can meet with speakers most relevant to their own research
and speak to them at greater length.

Keynote Address:
Professor Catriona Kelly (New College, Oxford)

Confirmed Speakers include:
Professor Catherine Merridale (Queen Mary)
Dr Daniel Beer (Royal Holloway)
Dr Seth Graham (UCL, SSEES)

Applications are invited from research students in all disciplines to
attend this innovative event. Please email
[email protected] including your name, institutional
affiliation and the title of your research project. Wherever possible
we will make contributions towards travel expenses and provide
assistance with accommodation.
