Yulia Tymoshenko is a very effective politician. Her lobby in the European Union is able to give President Viktor Yanukovych troubles. Today “the Iron Yulia” is presenting herself as a martyr to Ukraine being an European country. Will such a strategy lead her to victory?
Today (September 29) during her trial in the Kiev court, the former Prime Minister of Ukraine accused Ukrainian President of her deliberate detention in order to block the signing of the Association Agreement with the EU. “In fact, the president is killing the chance for signing the Association Agreement due to my arrest,” stated the head of the All-Ukrainian Union “Fatherland” (Bat’kivshchyna). Nevertheless, the major oppositionist is calling the EU authorities for ignoring the injustice committed to her by the Party of Regions, Tymoshenko is appealing for continuing the negotiations regarding the Agreement.
The ex-premier has been detained since June this year. The prosecutors demand 7 years of imprisonment, a 3-year ban on serving public function and a fine for financial loss of USD 200 million Ukraine sustained through her fault. Yulia Tymoshenko is also charged for abuse of power and embezzlement which she was supposed to make in 2009 during signing of a gas contract with Russia.
Despite her conviction about being blameless, Tymoshenko declares that the trial has a political base and most probably she is to be given the guilty verdict.
The experts indicate that the Eastern Partnership Summit, or at least some of its part, will be eclipsed by Tymoshenko’s trial. According to official information about talks between Polish and Ukrainian presidents before the Summit, the subject of the former PM was not raised. However, the fact is that Ukraine will not sign the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA) at the EaP Summit.
