Ukraine: Opposition Unites Before the Elections

The opposition parties “Fatherland” and “People’s Self-Defence” will form a joint electoral register for Ukrainian parliament. The decision was made with both leaders’ consent – former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko’s and former Minister of Internal Affairs Yuriy Lutsenko’s. Both are currently in prison.

Yulia Tymoshenko’s “Fatherland” and Yuriy Lutsenko’s “People’s Self-Defence” intend to form one electoral register in the parliamentary elections in October 2012. On Wednesday (28.12.2011), during a joint press conference, Oleksandr Turchynov (deputy head of the “Fatherland”), Mykola Tomenko (deputy chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, “Fatherland” party) and Yuriy Hrymchak (deputy head of the “People’s Self-Defence” party) informed about their election plans. The leaders of the two parties are now in prison – former Prime Minister was sentenced to seven years of imprisonment, while former Minister of Internal Affairs is on remand.

“On the basis of the binding regulations we cannot merge (see: New electoral law came into force in Ukraine). We can only have a joint electoral register. So we will be looking for a mechanism allowing us to have one electoral register,” said Mykola Tomenko. Deputy chairman of parliament also informed about the possible participation of other opposition parties in the process of uniting. “We are holding talks with these parties (the nationalist Oleg Tiahnybok’s “Svaboda” and Arseniy Yatsenyuk’s “Front for Change”) and working on the minimum plan – forming one list in the majority vote constituencies.”
