Azerbaijan: Keeps Bidding for International Events

On 14 April in Moscow, Azerbaijan’s First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva presented strong points of Baku, the capital city of her country, as the host of 2020 Summer Olympics.

Mehriban Aliyeva told the delegates at the General Assembly of Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) in Moscow: “let me assure you, we are ready”. “Baku is a vibrant city, a visionary mixture of ancient and modern architecture, a rich palette of cultures and generations of history. Above all, Baku is a dynamic, healthy-lifestyle city. On a fine summer day, you can swim in the warm waters of the Caspian Sea, go for a run along the Boulevard or enjoy sports in several newly constructed, state-of-the-art facilities”, said the First Lady, emphasizing recent development of potential Olympic venues,

The wife of the President assured that the event has a strong support of her husband as well as Azerbaijani citizens (according to polls – 95 percent). Elkhan Mammadov, Baku 2020 Sports and Venues Director, added: “The positive impact of Baku 2020 is almost impossible to calculate. The legacy for sport in Azerbaijan will transform the lives of athletes for generations to come”.

Four other cities also bidding for the 2020 Summer Olympics are: Istanbul (Turkey), Tokyo (Japan), Doha (Qatar) and Madrid (Spain).

In May, Baku hosts the Eurovision Song Contests, the programme with the longest TV history, watched each year by more than 100 million people. Azerbaijan, the local key player in regard to energy resources transit, wants also to become a cultural, sport and economic centre of the region.
