Georgia: Controversial Amendment

Bidzina Ivanishvili will not use an absurd, in his opinion, constitutional amendment, which would allow him running for a president and voting in Georgia without having a Georgian citizenship.

Bidzina Ivanishvili has refused to participate in this year’s parliamentary elections – as a voter and a candidate – which would be possible under a constitutional amendment, passed by the Georgian Parliament on 22 May. According to the billionaire, it threatens both the constitution and the state itself, which he emphasized in the letter to the incumbent President, published on 22 May in Georgian media: “… this amendment is hindering the statehood and the fundamental principles of the constitutionalism … Even more, with its judiciary essence and political context constitutes subverting the rule of law for the government. Indeed the constitution is being changed for one person but that person is not I but you”.

“However, I do not intend to reacquire my political rights by humiliating the constitution and destroying of the state. My team members and I need the political rights in order to rebuild the state and the constitutional order, not the reverse”, Ivanishvili declared.
