SBIO is pleased to announce ‘Belarus in Focus 2013’ – the 3rd edition of an international competition for journalists. The competition is open to all journalists and others who have published an article about Belarus in 2013 in media outside of Belarus. The competition is open from now until January 20, 2014 (midnight).
By holding this competition each year, we wish to encourage journalists (and editors) to pay attention to ongoing events and trends in Belarus– political, economic, social, and cultural.
By creating a place for exchange and debate, we hope to contribute to journalistic understanding about Belarus and, consequently, the level of interest among the international public about events taking place in Belarus – a country on the E.U’s eastern border.
The following prizes are available:
Professional journalists: x 3 prizes of 500 EUR
Beginner journalists: x 3 prizes of 300 EUR
In addition, winners will be invited to a two-day workshop in Warsaw in spring 2014 where they will have the opportunity to meet jury members and journalists from independent Belarusian media.
This year’s judging panel, chaired by Prof. David R. Marples, University of Alberta (UK/Canada), consists of Andrei Aliaksandrau, Index on Censorship (Belarus/UK), Michael Andersen, NIRAS (Denmark), Maria Przełomiec, Telewizja Polska (Poland) and Pavel Sheremet, Belarus Partisan (Belarus/Russia).
‘Belarus in Focus 2013’ is held by Solidarity with Belarus Information Office in collaboration with Press Club Belarus and Press Club Polska. Information partners are: Belarusian PEN Centre (Minsk), Civic Belarus (Prague), European Federation of Journalists (Brussels), n-
